French story – being appreciative

Laughing faces drawn in pencilThe following awkward moment happened to my Dad many years ago when their children were still young, at a time when satellite navigation systems were not part of our normal lives. They were driving all the way from south-eastern France to the UK to visit some friends. Being lost in these rows of identical looking houses, my Dad stopped the car next a lady walking on the pavement. In his very strong French accent, he asked for directions. Very kindly, the lady directed him, having to repeat herself a couple of times and speaking slowly to ensure my Dad had time to process everything. Afterwards, my Dad gave her a big smile and said: “Thank you very much Lady, you were very helpless”. Imagine the poor lady’s face ! :-)
