In the winter, I often leave food outside to speed up the cooling process before placing it in the fridge or freezer, making sure that it is safe from any opportunistic thieves (whether my dog or the neighbour’s cat). In the warmer weather, this is not possible so you need to use another technique.
Always keep a stock of ice packs in the freezer. They are very handy for cooling food down quickly. Just place one (or more) under the plate or dish containing the hot food you are trying to cool down quickly.
Ice pack alternative use:
- In the summer, take your frozen ice packs with you in a bag (preferably insulated bag) when you go food shopping. This will help protect your diaries or meat from the heat.
